What is a doula?

A doula is trained professional who provides support (both physical and emotional) and assistance to birthing persons and families during labour and childbirth. Doulas serve as a labour coach and information source to give the birthing person and their family added comfort and additional support throughout the entire labour. We provide reassurance, acceptance and encouragement throughout your labour. We use various comfort measures such as massage, breathing, and positioning for your relaxation and strength. We encourage and promote self-advocacy, informed choice, and communication between parent and care providers.

What is a postpartum doula?

Postpartum doulas are trained to understand what new babies and parents truly need. We can help with soothing techniques, offer chest or bottle feeding support, and explain newborn behaviour. We take care of the you, so that you can take care of your new baby and family. We can also help with light housework (say, a load of laundry) or watch your baby while you shower or nap!

Is a doula the same as a midwife?

Not at all! Doulas are not medical professionals, and we will never perform medical tasks. Your OB-GYN or midwife will assist in the clinical side of birth, while we will be an emotional and physical support to you.

Does a doula replace my partner?

No! Your doula and your partner work together as a team. While the doula probably knows more about birth, hospitals and care, your partner knows more about your personality, likes, dislikes and needs. During long and hard labours your doula can make sure your partner has time to do things such as eat, use the bathroom, or take a break, while you still get the one-on-one care that you need.

Do you only attend home births?

We can attend both home and hospital births!

I thought doulas were only for “that kind” of mom, Why do I need one?

Doulas are for “that kind” of mom- the kind who wants all the drugs, no drugs, or to wait and see. The kind who has a supportive partner, a clueless partner, or no partner at all. The kind who feeds from a breast or from a bottle. The kind who deserves respect, support, encouragement and peace during birth and throughout the postpartum period. Doulas are here to assist in the type of birth you want, and provide evidence-based information for whichever birth that may be.
